like taking candy...

So my Friends, today i just earned a free large coffee with just cream.

How did i do that you ask? Well it certainly wasn't by winning roll up the rim. I'm batting .000 on that front this year. I plan to bounce back next year...

No, today i made a bet that i cannot lose. You see, i am a tigers fan, and my friend jon is a...well he normally only likes whoever is good at the time, but he lives in TO so we'll call him a half hearted jays fan. We have made a wager that when the tigers finish the season with more wins...i get a coffee.

This bet is not only about which team is better, but it boils down to which one of us has the greater baseball knowledge. If I wanted a challenge, I'd put together a puzzle that only has 2 pieces. But this match pails in comparison.

So, technically i earned a free coffee, but have to wait till the end of the season to collect.

you're already a mile behind, and after the jays sweep this series, and than again in september we'll be seeing some late october ball while you're left wondering what happened.

and to respond to jake...i realize the tigers aren't making the playoffs... i suggest you do the same for the jays.

i will not! I'm a man of hope, and every year can be THE year. THIS is it.

Ok, so last night's game was embarrassing, but I forge on.

How dare you assume that you have a better chance of winning games than we do. Firstly, we have several players who could have been legitimately considered 'above average' as little as 3 years ago! I give you Scott Rolen.

Secondly, we have Vernon Wells. Have you ever seen a center fielder who has a more non-chalant, 'cool guy' persona as he saunters up to the plate or casually jogs down doubles to the gap? And plus, at one point, that guy totally hit, like, .325. So... I think you get what I'm saying...

And finally, you wouldn't know, cause you've never seen it. But when we enter the bottom of the ninth clinging desperately to a 1-run lead, and that bullpen opens, and that 80's Journey-inspired rock music starts blaring, and BJ Ryan comes racing down towards the mound from left field, and then he's in the stretch, and then he's delivering that high, lady-killing... 87 mph two-seamer.... well, suffice to say it's like a game already in-hand.

So go ahead and talk, my friend. But we both know that this bet will be won in September.. cause.. you know... we certainly won't be playing in October, and neither will you. And until that sweet taste of victory is mine, I plan to whole-heartedly enjoy that sweet sweet feeling of inevitability.... like the feeling you get when it's bases loaded and Marco Scutaro knocking the dirt out of those cleats.

PS. my teams always win. And that's only partly due to the fact that I pick them based on where the reside in the standings at pivotal moments in the season.

Yours smugly,
Cito Gaston
